Once a voluntary organisation starts to gain funding, employs staff and has a constitution, it needs to be run like an efficient small business if it is to survive and develop.
There are legal requirements it has to meet, there are policies it needs to install, and there are practices that must be developed. Without these it could be contravening the law, failing to properly support its staff, get into financial difficulties and find itself involved in tribunals and legal investigations. It may even be forced to close down its operations.
I have helped many voluntary organisations to develop or update their policies, procedure and practices. Sometimes this has been an essential part of working towards a quality standard, at other times is has been requested in order that they may get their house in order so that there is a clarity of work practice throughout the organisation.
